THEY LEFT AILEEN’S just before 4:00 p.m. The author had invited them to stay for dinner and Marlie wanted to accept, but Dex insisted that they had a lot to talk about before returning the next day.
Marlie suspected that their discussions would have nothing at all to do with tomorrow’s filming schedule, and everything to do with the argument they’d had on the terrace.
As they sped toward the cottage, Marlie kept her thoughts to herself. She wasn’t willing to admit that once again, he’d been right. Once she’d pressed, Aileen had offered so much more detail about her love affair with Geoffrey Willis, and they never would have gotten the footage if Dex hadn’t asked the first question.
“Are you ever going to talk to me again?”
She glanced over at him. “Of course. It would be pretty hard to work together if we didn’t speak. I just don’t feel like talking to you now.”
“I did what I thought was best for the film,” Dex said, staring out the windshield, his hands gripping the steering wheel. “You hired me because I’m good, and now you don’t want me to be good. How does that make feckin’ sense?”
“Don’t curse at me,” Marlie said.
“I didn’t curse.”
“You don’t think I know what feckin’ means?”
“Why are we arguing? I did my job, Marlie, and if you have a problem with that, then maybe you should fire me.”
Another long silence spun out around them both, the only sound the slap of the wipers on the windshield. She’d tried to let it go, but his intransigence had been such a surprise. “Remember how you said I’d be the boss? Was that just lip service or did you mean what you said? Because I don’t understand how you could ignore my wishes if you were taking all your orders from me.”
Cursing, Dex jerked the steering wheel sharply and the SUV veered off the road onto a rutted lane. They were driving toward the water, bouncing around with every bump they crossed. Marlie held tight to the handgrip above the door. She braced her other hand on the ceiling of the passenger compartment.
“Answer this. Was the footage we got good?”
“Yes.”
“Is it something we can use?”
“Yes.”
“All right. Can we stop arguing now?” Dex asked. “It’s done. There’s no use going over it again.”
But Marlie wasn’t ready to let go. What was the use of ground rules if he was just going to ignore them? “We had an agreement.”
“Well, that agreement isn’t working for me. Marlie, you have to let me do my job and trust that I’ll do it well. If you don’t trust me, then we’re going to have a helluva time trying to get along.”
“I do trust you,” she snapped, frustration coloring her tone. In truth, she’d never trusted a man as much as she trusted Dex.
He pulled the truck to a stop at the edge of a cliff overlooking the water. The sea was gray and angry, whitecaps driven across the surface by the wind. “What are we doing here?”
“Wait here,” he said.
